​Carbon and Water Dynamics ​in

​Agriculture

The Micromet Lab established a network of 6 eddy covariance flux sites in commercial agricultural fields in 2025. Sites are equipped with identical open-path CO2/H2O EC systems and a suite of other supporting biometeorological sensors where carbon, water, and energy fluxes are measured on a year-round basis.
Our goal is to determine how different agricultural management practices that enhance diversity and perenniality in cropping systems can increase sustainability and profitability while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss in the Black Soil Zone of the Canadian Prairies
.
The eddy flux network is part of LEAP, a multidisciplinary project involving faculty at the University of Manitoba and University of Saskatchewan as well as partners from Government, Non-Profit, and Producer Organizations. LEAP is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Tall Tower Measurements of

​Greenhouse Gases

The Micromet Lab started to operate a tall tower greenhouse gas observatory in 2025. First of its kind in Canada, the site is located in Yorkton (SK) at a CBC transmission tower. The site is equipped with sampling intakes installed at a height of 94 m where mixing ratios of N2O, CO2, and CO are measured.
These measurements are used with atmospheric inversion modelling techniques to determine regional budgets of N2O and CO2. Our goal is to quantify N2O emissions from agricultural regions in Western Canada to determine metrics that can aid growers in achieving emission reduction targets. This work is in collaboration with
Claudia Wagner-Riddle (University of Guelph) and Tim Griffis (University of Minnesota). 
The tall tower observatory is part of
CanN2ONet, a network of Universities, Industry, Government, and Producer Organizations focused on quantifying the cycling of nitrogen in agroecosystems. CanN2ONet is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
